The 2026 Mayor’s Levee

The New Year’s levée is a long-standing civic tradition with historical roots, evolving over centuries into the community celebration we see today. The term levée originates from France, derived from lever, meaning “to rise.” In the 17th century, King Louis XIV customarily received subjects in his bedchamber shortly after rising each morning, a practice that spread throughout Europe and later to British court culture as a formal daytime reception.

In Canada, the levée took on a distinct meaning. By the 18th century, fur traders marked New Year’s Day by paying their respects to the master of the fort, a government representative. This custom was adopted by colonial governors and, over time, became a New Year’s Day tradition observed by governors general, lieutenant governors, military leaders, and municipalities. The first recorded Canadian levée occurred on January 1st, 1646, in New France, where the governor welcomed residents, reflected on the year past, and shared hopes for the year ahead.

Over generations, the levée has shifted from a formal, male-only event to a welcoming gathering open to people of all ages and backgrounds. Today, it serves as a moment for reflection, and connection, an opportunity for communities to come together and mark the beginning of a new year.

This New Year’s Day the mayor is hosting her own Mayor’s Levee. Held at the Ihtoli-maqahamok Gathering Space on the Boardwalk, the 2026 Mayor’s Levee will be a display of community and optimism for the coming year. The location itself carries meaning, situated on the traditional unceded and unsurrendered territories of the Wolastoqey people. Gathering at this site on New Year’s Day honours the longstanding importance of community, connection to land, and shared space.

This year’s levee embraces a contemporary, family-friendly celebration featuring public skating, live local music, free warm refreshments and sweet treats, and brief remarks from the mayor. Our Saint John spirit remains unchanged, with this event we are welcoming everyone and looking forward to what is ahead.

As we enter a new year, the mayor is inviting everyone to the levee to participate in a tradition, celebrating resilience, and togetherness.
