Staying Safe During Canadian Winter Storms

Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for snow, freezing rain, and rain. Also known as a Canadian winter storm in January, and not the kind of weather to be taken lightly.

Winter storms in Canada can be disruptive. You might lose power, and face dangerous driving conditions. Having said that, being prepared can help you stay safe and warm.

Here are three ways to get ready:

1. Get Your Home Ready

You should have enough supplies to last for 3 days without leaving your house.

Make sure you have bottled water and food that doesn’t need to be cooked (like crackers or canned tuna).

Flashlights and extra batteries (avoid using candles).

Warm blankets and thick sweaters for everyone in the house.

A backup charger for your phone.

2. Prepare Your Car

If you have to drive, make sure your car is ready for the ice and snow. Winter tires are a must for safety.

Keep a snow brush and a small shovel in the trunk.

Keep a warm blanket, and extra hats and gloves in the car just in case you get stuck.

Make sure your gas tank is at least half full.

3. Stay Safe Outdoors.

But if you must go outside, dress in layers. It’s better to wear three thin shirts than one heavy one.

Watch for frostbite. If your skin looks very white or feels numb, get inside immediately.

Take breaks. Shovelling heavy snow is hard work. Stop and rest so you don’t hurt yourself.

Check the weather report often. If a big storm is coming, stay home and stay off the roads if possible.
