“Save Me” by Jelly Roll could actually help you save a life.
The singer has a past influenced by addiction. Jelly – born Jason DeFord – is a former drug dealer who struggled with addiction – going to jail 40 times for various drug charges, the first time at only 14. He missed the birth of his daughter, Bailey, while incarcerated. Managed to turn his life around, and – as of last night – is a 3-time Grammy award winner who uses his platform to support harm reduction, recovery, and people who are too often stigmatized or ignored.
It seems appropriate that Avenue B Harm Reduction re-wrote the lyrics to his song, “Save Me,” to walk us through the life-saving steps of responding to an opioid overdose using naloxone. SAVE ME are the steps to remember – two words for two stages – when responding to an opioid overdose.
Stimulate – stimulate by shouting, put your knuckles to their collar bone. If unresponsive, call 911
Airway – tilt their head back and lift their chin to open their airway
Ventilate – 1 breath every 5 seconds. Evaluate.
Evaluate – can they breathe on their own? If yes, wait for EMTs to arrive. If no, move on to the next stage.
Muscular Injection – administer 1mL of naloxone. Inject in thigh or butt; you can go through clothing.
Evaluate and support. If they don’t wake up in 2-3 minutes, administer a second dose
Please watch, share, and help spread the message.
If you don’t already carry naloxone, it’s strongly encouraged to get training and keep it with you. Avenue B offers FREE naloxone training + kits at Avenue B It’s easy to use, safe, and can save a life.
