Since launching our Big Bookshelf with Big Brothers Big Sisters in September, this cozy corner of our departures lounge has grown into something truly special.
What started as a simple idea to offer a “fly‑brary” experience at YSJ has become the busiest Big Brothers Big Sisters bookshelf location.
We’re excited to share that the Big Bookshelf has already raised $550 in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mentoring programs. Every donation tap helps create meaningful, life‑changing friendships for youth in our region and our passengers have embraced it wholeheartedly.
And now a new chapter in this story: Air Canada is now proudly sponsoring the Big Bookshelf, covering the full cost of the donation machine. Its support ensures that all the funds can flow directly to youth programming, while helping keep this reading initiative thriving.
Behind the scenes, our CATSA and security teams have been incredible, regularly stocking donated books, organizing titles, and purchasing some titles too. Their efforts are a big part of what keeps the shelf running smoothly.
Passengers are noticing the impact too. Recent feedback from our Passenger Experience survey captured the sentiment perfectly: “LOVE the bookshelf and how easy it is to donate.”
For those wanting to support even further, gently used book donations, including children’s and youth titles, are always welcome. Donations can be dropped off at:
Big Brothers Big Sisters office on the third floor of Brunswick Square every Wednesday. They even offer curbside pickup. Call ahead or when you arrive.
From the start, our goal was to simply offer passengers a little travel reading, but thanks to the support of Air Canada, our partners, staff, and the generosity of our travellers, the Big Bookshelf has become so much more.
YSJ and Air Canada are proud to give back to our community through this initiative, and we’re deeply grateful to our passengers for supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters in such a meaningful way.
