Charitable Organization of the Week: Compassionate Grief Centre

There are many charities in Saint John and the surrounding area. You’ve probably heard some of their names, but may not know exactly what they do. Each week, we’ll highlight a different organization, sharing who they are and the work they do. We’ll also let you know about any upcoming events where you can learn more or get involved.

This week’s Charity of the Week is the Compassionate Grief Centre.

Grief ruptures your life—not quietly, but suddenly.

It can arrive in a single moment: a phone call, a diagnosis, a goodbye you did not know would be the last. In an instant, everything familiar can feel altered. The world keeps moving, but something inside you has shifted, leaving you trying to find your footing in a life that no longer looks the same.

In those moments, grief is not gentle. It is disorienting. It is heavy. It asks you to carry what feels impossible.

At the Compassionate Grief Centre, we meet people in these moments.

We are a mental health charity devoted to supporting individuals and families navigating grief and loss in all its forms. Our mission is simple, yet deeply meaningful: to make life better for people in New Brunswick who are facing illness, grief, loss, and life’s many challenges.

Each year, more than 1,200 people walk through our doors—carrying stories of love, loss, and everything in between. Some are grieving the death of someone dear. Others are learning to live with the loss of health, mobility, relationships, identity, or the future they once envisioned. While their experiences are different, they share something deeply human: the need to be seen, heard, and supported.

Because grief is not a problem to fix—it is a natural response to loss. It touches the emotional, physical, and psychological parts of who we are. And, no one should have to carry it alone.

So we walk alongside them.

In quiet counselling rooms, in supportive group circles, over coffee at our weekly Grief Cafés, and through educational workshops, we create spaces where people can speak their truth, share their stories, and begin to heal. Whether through one-on-one grief and loss counselling, support for those living with chronic illness, or community gatherings that remind people they are not alone, each program is built on compassion, connection, and care.

And we believe that support should never depend on someone’s ability to pay.

As a registered charity, we are sustained by the generosity of our community—through donations, sponsorships, grants, and fundraising efforts. This allows us to offer many of our programs at no cost, and to keep others accessible, ensuring that anyone who needs support can find it.

Because in the midst of loss, what people need most is not barriers—but a place to land.

A place where healing hearts and supporting wellness isn’t just a statement—it’s something we live, every day.

  • Krista has worked for Country 94 since Jan 2015 and is currently your host for the LIVE ON THE DRIVE with Krista, Monday through Friday 3-6 pm. What does Krista love about country music? EVERYTHING! She loves interviewing artists like Dean Brody, Tim Hicks, Lindsay Ell, going to concerts and dancing in the control booth on King St.

If you ask Krista her ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE thing, though, about country radio, the answer is the connection with you, the listener. The friendships made over the years with our listeners is second to none.
