September 11, 1941 – April 22, 2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gunar Sigurd Tomsons, which occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. Gunar will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Susan Thompson-Tomsons, who was his devoted companion. Gunar was a cherished son of the late Maxine Tomsons and Herbert Tomsons. He was predeceased by his sister, Susan Thomsons and is survived by his brother, Rainer Thomson.
He leaves behind a loving family who meant the world to him. His children, Debbie Tomsons (Stephan Kern), Tera Thorne (Duane Thorne) and Melissa Tomsons (Jonathan Maude), will forever hold his memory close. He was also a proud step-father to Terri Thomspon, William Thompson (Tammi Thompson) and Kelsey Thompson. Gunar was a beloved grandfather to Nathan, Kristy, Laura, Skyler, James, Isaiah, Grace, Jude and Elias and step-grandfather to Devan, Austin, Joshua, Haley, Adrian, Alex, Avery, Archer and Anderson. He was also a proud great-grandfather to Zachariah, Tyson, Joseph, Luna, Maverick and Jeremiah.
Gunar worked for 23 years as a security guard at Gate 14 with Irving, where he was known for his dedication and reliability. Prior to that, he worked as a superintendent at Regency Towers for 18 years. Outside of work, Gunar enjoyed golfing, bowling and he especially cherished the time he spent on family vacations.
He will be remembered for his sharp sense of humour, his sarcasm and his ability to make others laugh. Above all, Gunar loved his family deeply and made them the center of his world. His presence, laughter and love will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A Visitation/Celebration of Life will be held at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424) on Thursday, April 30, 2026 from 2pm-4pm and again at 6pm-8pm. There will be no funeral service.
