The City of Saint John is reminding owners and managers of multi‑family buildings of expanded recycling services now available through Circular Materials’ extended producer responsibility (EPR) recycling program for packaging and paper products.
As the program continues to roll out across New Brunswick, multi‑family buildings are now eligible to receive recycling services that make it easier to participate in the City’s Solid Waste By-Law while supporting a cleaner, more sustainable community.
Recycling is a requirement under City by‑law
Participation in recycling is not optional. Under the City of Saint John’s Solid Waste By‑Law, multi‑family residential buildings (with more than four residential units) are required to participate in approved waste diversion programs such as recycling. Registering with Circular Materials helps landlords and property managers meet their by‑law obligations while ensuring tenants have access to proper recycling services and reducing the amount of recyclable material sent to landfill.
How the program works
- Property owners or managers register their building through Circular Materials’ online registry.
- Once registered, the building’s information is shared with the appropriate recycling collector for the region or service sector.
- The recycling collector will contact the property owner or manager to discuss next steps and may arrange a site visit to plan service delivery.
What tenants can do to help make recycling happen
Tenants play an important role in bringing recycling to multi‑family buildings. If you want recycling services where you live, here’s how you can help encourage participation:
- Start the conversation: Ask your landlord or property manager if they’re aware that multi‑family buildings are now eligible for recycling services through Circular Materials’ EPR program.
- Share the benefits: Explain that the program makes recycling easier for residents, collection is at no cost to the building owner, helps meet provincial recycling goals, and supports a cleaner, more sustainable Saint John.
- Point them in the right direction: Encourage them to register through Circular Materials’ online registry before the May 31, 2026, deadline.
- Show tenant support: Let them know residents value recycling and are willing to use the system responsibly once it’s available.
By speaking up and showing interest, tenants can help move the process forward and ensure recycling is available in their building.
Registration deadline: May 31, 2026, with service to begin on November 1, 2026.
Landlords and property managers who participate will help improve recycling convenience for tenants, support provincial recycling goals, and contribute to a more circular economy in Saint John.
For the most up‑to‑date information, property owners are encouraged to consult Circular Materials’ FAQ section, which is updated regularly as the program expands.
