Warning from RCMP about counterfeit cash

Beware of counterfeit cash.

RCMP is warning of an increase in funny money being used for purchases through Kijiji, Marketplace, and other online platforms.

Complaints have been received from individuals who sell items online, who have been paid with fake bills.

In most cases, it was only discovered after the suspects had left.

“While online marketplaces are a convenient way to buy and sell items, they can also be targeted by individuals with criminal intent,” said Cpl. Hans Ouellette. “We encourage the public to remain vigilant and take precautions when meeting buyers or sellers.”

RCMP are offering some tips:

-Inspect cash carefully: Check for security features on bills, such as raised ink, holograms, and transparent windows.

-Consider alternative payment methods: Digital payments may reduce risk.

-Trust your instincts: If something or someone seems suspicious, cancel the transaction.
