Progressive Conservative leader Blaine Higgs has given a thumbs down to the Gallant government’s “new deal” with the City of Saint John.
During a scrum after a Saint John Chamber of Commerce event on Thursday, Higgs said the solution is only short-term and that’s not good enough.
“We have to find a way to ensure this city thrives, and right now, the city needs a focused effort and a meaningful way to see a longer-term view not just throw money in it,” said Higgs.
“This city is the engine for a lot of the province — with the ice-free port year-round — and certainly for this community, and a transportation hub really in many ways. If we don’t find ways to have this city thrive, the whole surrounding communities are taking a risk on that.”
Higgs said it’s obvious the Liberals are trying to buy Saint John with this and other announcements, but he knows the people in the city are too smart to fall for it.
