Police in Calais, Maine, say a 35‑year‑old man swung a sword at officers before he was shot during a traffic stop.
Police said officers stopped a vehicle at the intersection of Main Street and North Street on Friday.
The man refused to follow commands after being told he was under arrest, according to the release.
Police said a taser was used, but it did not work, and officers then attempted to physically take him into custody.
The man continued to resist, grabbed a sword and swung it at officers before they fired their weapons.
Police said the man was taken to Calais Regional Hospital and later airlifted to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he was stabilized.
The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, which the department said is standard procedure when deadly force is used.
Police said the man will be charged with failure to stop, operating after suspension, failure to submit to arrest and detention, as well as criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon.
The Maine Attorney General’s Office will investigate the use of force, while Calais Police will investigate the underlying criminal conduct.
