The Saint John Rapids female team faced a difficult weekend on the floor, but despite the results, the squad continued to demonstrate the resilience, work ethic, and team-first attitude that have become defining characteristics of this strong and developing program.
The Rapids opened the weekend on Saturday against the Dartmouth Bandits, facing a solid opponent that capitalized on its opportunities throughout the contest. Dartmouth built momentum early and eventually earned a 7-1 victory. While the result was not what Saint John had hoped for, the Rapids continued to battle from start to finish and showed the determination that has been evident throughout the season.
Maddy Corrigan provided the offensive highlight for Saint John, scoring the Rapids’ lone goal of the game. The team continued to generate opportunities despite facing a disciplined Dartmouth defence, and several players stepped up with strong individual efforts throughout the contest. Goaltender Chloe Doiron stood tall for the Rapids and Kat Garland faced consistent pressure in relief, making numerous key saves to keep the Rapids competitive during several stretches of the game.
Rather than allowing Saturday’s result to define the weekend, the Rapids returned to the floor on Sunday ready to compete against the Sackville Wolves.
The Wolves entered the contest as one of the league’s strongest teams and ultimately earned a 9-2 victory, but the final score does not reflect the effort and determination displayed by the Rapids throughout the game. Saint John continued to battle for loose balls, create offensive opportunities, and support one another in every area of the floor despite facing a talented opponent.
The Rapids found positives offensively as they were able to generate two goals against a strong Sackville squad. Maddy Corrigan opened the scoring with first goal of the contest. Meghan Hull scored Saint John’s second goal of the game mid-way through the third period with assists from Morgan Daley and Regan MacKinley. Importantly, the team continued to show improvement in areas that the coaching staff has emphasized throughout the season, including communication, transition play, and overall team structure.
Throughout both games, the Rapids received contributions from across the roster. Veteran players provided leadership, younger players gained valuable experience, and the entire group continued to work together through challenging situations. As the season continues, the focus remains on growth, teamwork, and steady improvement. With a dedicated group of players, strong leadership, and a commitment to working hard, the future is bright for the Saint John Rapids female team.
The results may not have gone their way this weekend, but the determination, character, and resilience displayed by the Rapids are qualities that will continue to serve them well in the games ahead. They currently sit middle of the pack in the standings with a .500 record. They are well poised to make the play-offs and to challenge with an exciting run down the stretch.
