Heavy Drinking Can Cause Dementia Or Early-Onset Dementia

It’s enough to make you think twice about having that after dinner cocktail or night cap before bed.

A report in the Lancet Public Health Journal says heavy drinking may be associated with a higher risk of developing dementia and especially early-onset dementia.

The study looked at over one million cases of diagnosed dementia in adults over 20 in France between 2008 and 2013 and in more than 57,000 cases it found 57 percent were caused from heavy drinking.

It found that chronic drinking was the biggest preventable risk factor for the development of dementia.

The World Health Organization defines heavy drinking as consuming on average four to five standard drinks per day for men and three drinks per day for women.

Chronic drinking can also decrease your life expectancy by more than 20 years according to the study.
