Sit Tight For Another Possible Fort Announcement, MP Says

Saint John-Rothesay MP Wayne Long thinks if we just sit tight in the next several months we’ll see another announcement about another national historic fort.

It was announced in January of 2016 by federal minister Catherine McKenna that $13.5-million would spent to literally rebuild Martello Tower on the west side brick by brick which was expected to take two years.

“I think that if people just stay patient within the next several months I think there’s going to be a very, very good news announcement on another national historic fort,” says Long, “and I look foward to some real good news very soon.”

While Long didn’t specify what the possible project would be, CHSJ News reported last year that an application was submitted to all three levels of government for a $2-million project that would see an actual fort built at the Fort La Tour site. Long has also spoken with us about Fort Howe.

Fort Howe is a designated national historic site of Canada, guarding the settlement throughout the American Revolutionary war and again during the war of 1812. Fort La Tour is also a national historic site, it’s among other historically significant things one of the earliest centres of the French fur trade with Aboriginal people in the region.
