A Friendly Face Along the Way

After a long day of travel, sometimes the most welcome sight is someone ready to say hello.

At YSJ, that’s where the Fundy Wayfinders come in.

The airport’s volunteer program connects community members with travellers who could use directions, answers to everyday questions or a little reassurance as they find their way.

Among the first to join was Abby McDonald, who has now been volunteering for more than a year. Recently featured in a YSJ video, Abby is part of a group helping make the terminal a welcoming place.

Tanya Psaras, YSJ’s manager of operations and regulatory affairs, started the program in August 2025 with encouragement from the airport team. It typically has five to eight volunteers contributing their time throughout the year.

For Tanya, its purpose is simple.

“It is all about people helping people,” she says.

That might mean explaining where to go next to someone taking their first flight, answering a question for a nervous passenger or offering a friendly conversation after a tiring journey.

Volunteers receive an introduction to airport operations and safety before taking on their role. They provide basic information and directions, complementing the work of airport staff.

The experience offers something to volunteers, too. Those curious about aviation can learn more about how an airport works while meeting people and contributing to their community.

The program asks for a minimum two-hour commitment when volunteers are available, with flexibility to fit around their lives.

For travellers, those donated hours can make an unfamiliar place feel more comfortable. And for volunteers, the reward often comes in the conversations – with neighbours, returning relatives and people discovering Saint John for the first time.

“There’s no other service that can match that feeling of friendliness and just a good conversation,” Tanya says.
