CUPE Holds Protest In Saint John In Support Of Canadian Red Cross Home Support Workers

A large protest in front of the Canadian Red Cross HQ in Loch Lomond Place on Thursday afternoon as CUPE supporters were on hand to help out Local 4598.

They are the home support workers under the Red Cross and they have been waiting for a contract from their employer for nine long years time according to Chris Watson from the Saint John & District Labour Council.

Watson says “it’s time that this employer starts working and taking care of their own.”

Therese Duguay is the president of Local 4598 and said she was very pleased to see so much support for them and told the crowd it will be nine years on March 31 since they had a contract.

Duguay says “we have been asking our employer the Red Cross from other side to bring fairness to the bargaining table, we have no guaranteed hours, this is low paid, unstable work with few benefits.”

Among those on hand for the protest was provincial NDP Leader Jennifer McKenzie who said an NDP government will make sure all health care workers make a minimum of $15.00 per hour.
