United Way Presents Community Excellence Awards

An extra $40,000 from the 2017 United Way campaign allowing for some deserving groups to get some cash.

The campaign brought in more than 1.7 million dollars.

It handed out its Community Excellence Awards last night.

Winners include Milltown Elementary School in St. Stephen which has 200 students.

Heather Bell-Williams is the school’s principal and she says “the united way has been very involved in many many initiatives over the years, we’ve sought support from them in a variety of different ways for community outreach programs and summer outreach programs for students”.

Milltown Elementary was surprised with three awards which include a total of $19,000 in funding support.

Christina Fowler of the Saint John Learning Exchange was surprised to win the EY Innovation and Flexibility Award.

“Innovation for us is about listening to the client and really looking critically at your community looking at where the needs are and working to address those needs” says Fowler.

David Veale of Vision Coaching got the Welcome to The United Way award.

His business is part of the United Way’s Million Dollar pledge where 10 businesses commit to donating $10,000 for a decade in an effort to improve lives and it is looking to expand into PEI.

“The idea that we kind of came up and started to play with has attracted other small businesses”. says Veale.

” I feel like we are setting up a bit of a model that can be replicated throughout North America.”

The awards were given out at a reception in The Hall of Great Whales at the New Brunswick museum.
