Another Swarm Of Earthquake Activity Rocks McAdam

McAdam residents have been rattled over the last couple of weeks, literally, as more than a dozen earthquakes have been recorded in the area.

Starting on March 27 with a 2.6 magnitude earthquake, the area has seen a total of 14 earthquakes with the last being recorded on April 3 and all are listed as having been felt.

Natural Resources Canada seismologist Stephen Halchuk says there were swarms of activity in the area in both 2012 and early 2016. Halchuk says they aren’t able to point to a specific cause as to why this is happening.

“We’re not able to say what causes it, or when it’s going to occur again or even if it’s going to occur again,” says Halchuk. “So, it remains a bit of a mystery but we are monitoring the situation.”

As for whether it’s cause for concern, Halchuk says they don’t feel there is the possibility of very large damaging events but they can’t rule it out.

You can hear the full interview with Halchuk on Pulse NB this Sunday after the 9 am news and again at 9 pm.
