Developer Plans To Turn South End Building Into Apartments

A local developer plans on turning the former Salvation Army men’s shelter in Saint John’s south end into a 25-unit apartment building.

The developer is Mike Cavanagh and his proposal is to have one and two-bedroom apartments in the building at 36 St. James Street which has been vacant for four years when the Salvation Army Centre of Hope closed.

Bob McVicar of Sutton Realty is the listing agent for the now-sold property and he tells CHSJ News this is exciting news for the neighbourhood.

“A lot of capacity on this site,” says McVicar. “We’ll have another 50 to 100 people living in that area which is exciting.”

McVicar tells us momentum in the uptown is building and increasing in intensity.

“The more momentum we have, the more momentum we seem to get. I don’t think we’re anywhere near the top end of this, and I see a stretch of several years ahead of this.”
