Two major fires about 30 minutes apart kept Saint John fire crews busy on Saturday night.
Platoon chief Barry Oickle says a shed fire was reported on Hawthorne Avenue Extension around 12:50 a.m. Sunday.
Oickle says the fire also made its way into the attic of an attached bungalow.
“The shed and the bungalow suffered very extensive damage,” says Oickle. “A second home … did suffer minor heat damage to the exterior.
Oickle says there were people inside both homes at the time but no one was hurt.
Then around 1:20 a.m. Sunday, there was a fire in a three-storey wooden structure attached to a four-storey building on Exmouth Street.
“Police on scene reported that tenants were evacuated,” he says. “Rescue 4 arrived on scene, secured a water supply, and went attack. They made their way to the third story and knocked down the bulk of the fire.”
Oickle says the fire was contained to the one apartment and both blazes are still under investigation.
Crews also dealt with a small kitchen fire in a Charlotte Street apartment shortly before 3 p.m. Saturday.
