UPDATED: ‘Product’ Release At Refinery Leads To Strong Odour

**Story updated at 8:25 p.m. Sunday**

If you noticed a strange smell in the air in Saint John on Sunday morning, you weren’t alone.

Fire crews received several calls about a strong odour in different locations throughout the city.

Some people also took to social media wondering where the smell was coming from.

Platoon chief Barry Oickle tells us it appears the odour was coming from the Irving Oil Refinery.

An Irving Oil spokesperson confirmed in an email there was an incident at the Saint John refinery on Sunday morning.

Sam Robinson says a unit restart “regrettably resulted in a release of product, causing offsite impacts.”

“The appropriate authorities have been notified and we apologize for any inconvenience this has caused to neighbours,” says Robinson.

She says anyone with questions or concerns related to the incident can contact Irving Oil at 506-202-3000.
