The city of Saint John is estimating the cost of the historic flooding in our neck of woods at just over $1 million as of June 7.
Saint John’s finance committee heard that the city is on the hook for about $308,000 of that.
Chair David Merrithew says Saint John EMO saved hundreds of thousands of dollars through berms and sandbagging.
“It had to be done, it had to be done right, they did it, we’ll account for it afterwards,” says Merrithew.
“At the end of the day, if it’s $300,000 or $350,000, it seems like we got off cheap for what happened.”
Most costs not recovered by the city’s insurance will be recovered through NB EMO’s Disaster Financial Assistance Program.
Mayor Don Darling says the flooding was probably one of the most significant events we’ve ever had and that the community support throughout the event was amazing and the work done by EMO was phenomenal.
