More Streets Added To Asphalt Resurfacing List

More Saint John streets will get a fresh coat of blacktop this year than originally planned.

Council awarded the 2018 asphalt resurfacing contract worth just over $5 million back in April.

It came in about $800,000 under budget so staff decided to add extra streets to this year’s program and council approved the changes at Monday night’s meeting.

They include Loch Lomond Road from Hickey Road to Bon Accord Drive, Paradise Row from Somerset Street to Winter Street, and Manawagonish Road from Kierstead Road to Birch Street.

Councillor Donna Reardon raised concerns about asphalt quality, saying roads aren’t lasting as long as they used to.

Transportation commissioner Michael Hugenholtz says the city does an annual general specification review and also follows industry standards.
