Community Club, Former Fire Hall To Be Demolished After Flooding

Two buildings will be meeting the wrecking ball because of the extensive damage sustained after water levels rose to historic proportions this spring.

The Nauwigewauk Community Club executive committee released a notice saying the community club hall and the former fire hall are coming down, as they weren’t insured for flood damage and aren’t eligible for flood insurance because the property has flooded before.

President Taya Wallace tells CHSJ News the community club hall had two feet of water and the fire hall had about double that.

“The very difficult decision was based on the probability of future flooding, the uncertainty of our new road being fixed, hopefully, and the planned construction of a new multi-purpose recreational building in Hampton,” says Wallace.

“We are waiting right now for the decision basically from the Emergency Measures Organization and the province to see if they’re going to help us with the funding of getting rid of the buildings.”

Wallace says they’d like to focus all their energy on the remaining recreational areas, and they have some ideas brewing like possibly a covered picnic area for future events.

When it comes to holding future events and meetings she says they’re collaborating with a few groups.

“The Nauwigewauk fire department is allowing us to have our monthly meetings at their brand-new facility and possibly some other smaller events. The Hammond River Angling Association has also offered us some support in collaborating with us with future larger events like dances and parties,” says Wallace.

They’re also getting a helping hand from the town of Hampton in the form of helping the growth of their outside recreational facility.
