Online Project Features Local Soldiers From First World War

Two Saint Johners have launched a joint project to mark this year’s 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

Bernard Cormier tells our newsroom wanted to do something to pay tribute to the local soldiers who died during the war.

So he met up with local historian Harold Wright and pitched the idea.

“I suggested the idea of posting on a daily basis, for the 100 days leading up to Remembrance Day, a daily post that would feature a soldier or a gravesite,” Cormier said.

Cormier looks after making the social media posts and Wright provides the historical information.

The 100-day countdown started on Saturday and Cormier said the reaction has been positive so far.

“We’re getting a lot of comments on our postings from people that know some of these soldiers or their parents knew them or their grandparents knew them,” he said.

Cormier served with the Royal Canadian Air Force for 11 years and although he did not fight in any conflict, he said he has a strong respect for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
