Lots Of Ideas Emerge To Make South-Central Peninsula More Liveable

Respectful creativity when it comes to new development in the South-Central Peninsula. That’s one of the ideas to emerge from the summit held at St. John the Baptist-King Edward School with the goal being to revitalise that part of town.

Lots of ideas were put forward which include more greenery and more green spaces. Mark Reid of Urban Strategies says there’s vacant land that could be used for residential development. He points to the northwest corner of Queen Square as an example where there’s enough vacant land for 3 or 4 storey apartment buildings.

Other ideas include the need for a grocery store, affordable housing and greater access to the waterfront. Common Councillor Gerry Lowe has talked about a south waterfront that would encompass Tin Can Beach and the land where the sugar refinery once stood since residential development on that property appears to be a no go.

Development of the Coast Guard site is seen as a prime opportunity to spur further development in the uptown.
