Major Cleanup Of Shorelines In Southwest Bay of Fundy Area This Weekend

A huge shoreline cleanup is happening this weekend in 18 different locations in the southwest Bay of Fundy region.

The cleanup sites for the Great Fundy Coastal Cleanup range from Seaside Park in Saint John to the Pagan Point Nature Preserve in Saint Andrews to the Cape Enrage Marsh Nature Preserve near Alma.

Bethany Young with the Nature Trust of New Brunswick says our shorelines are very important for lost of nesting, migratory birds and sealife.

“Close to the shoreline is a very productive area for animals to thrive ecologically, which lots of different biodiversity there,” says Young.

“More and more these sites, they have a lot of debris washing up from locally and from international areas.”

Young says they find lots of nets and ropes that have been cut loose.

“Lots of plastic, plastic bags, beach toys that got washed up, shoes and really anything you can think of. We’ve found toilets before, and washing machines.”

The cleanups are happening from 10am to 4pm on Saturday though exact timing will depend on each location. Volunteers are being sought so if you’d like to lend a helping hand you can sign up by calling the Nature Trust.
