The bankruptcy laws don’t protect workers and should be changed according to the New Brunswick Federation of Labour, pointing to what has happened at Sears as an example. Labour Federation President Patrick Colford says many long term employees, who would otherwide be legally eligible for compensation, will receive nothing.
Colford says the big banks and large creditors will get their money but the workers find themselves at the bottom of the heap and that’s not right.
Lawyers for the Sears employees are asking an Ontario judge to have the company reinstate or continue their health benefits until October. The Court granted Sears Canada temporary protection from its creditors three weeks ago.
One of the Sears employees who lost his job and severance pay is Peter Myers, brother of comedian Mike Myers, both of whom appeared in an ad for Sears a few years ago.
