Advocating For Fair Taxation Is One Of Saint John Council’s Priorities

Tax concessions granted to big industries in New Brunswick by the provincial government has been a big topic of discussion this year, especially with the introduction of legislation to reverse the tax break that capped the property tax for Canaport LNG at $500,000 a year until 2030.

Mayor Don Darling says advocating for fair taxation is one of council’s priorities.

Darling says the goal is to look at how taxes apply between residents and commercial businesses.

In late November councillor Gerry Lowe made a submission to council that the City Manager prepare a report analyzing the fairness of taxation among residents, commercial businesses, industries, etc and that bring back a recommendation to address any inequities.
