A petition continues to circulate in an effort to see changes made that will make roadways safer for cyclists.
Supporters came out in droves in Moncton, Saint John and Fredericton for rallies held on New Year’s Day to draw attention to the One Meter Law for Ellen. It was named that in memory of cyclist Ellen Watters who was hit and killed while riding in Sussex last month.
Moncton Centre MLA Chris Collins has spoken out in favour of new regulations..and he says there are other government members who appear to be supportive as well, What I am hearing from speaking to Ministers, including Doucet, Doherty and Rogers, they are all very supportive of there being more restrictions. I’m not sure whether this requires regulations or legislation. What has happened so far, government has heard loud and clear from the cyclists that there is a concern. Cyclists have done a terrific job in delivering that message.”
As an avid cyclist, Collins notes that something needs to be done, “This law would do two things. One, it gives the space necessary for cyclists to feel safer on the streets and be safer. It also brings awareness that they have rights on the roadways, just as motorists do.”
He says this could take time, as any law or change to legislation would, and there is a lot of work to be done on this yet….
