Five summer camps are being held around Atlantic Canada this season where kids with type one diabetes can come together and just be kids.
Manager of camp and youth programs in Atlantic Canada for Diabetes Canada Lara Abramsom tells us that diabetes can be a very isolating disease and can take you away from the norm of what your peers are doing which can be scary to a kid.
She says the kids get one week of being on a really safe comfortable island surrounded by people who just get it.
All the program staff and counsellors live with type one diabetes.
There’s one diabetes summer camp in New Brunswick, two in Nova Scotia, one in Newfoundland and Labrador and one in Prince Edward Island.
