Coalition Seeks Temporary Moratorium On Development Along Northumberland Coast

A coalition called “Save Wetlands Waters and Tourism” (SWWAT) is stepping up its fight against further development along the Northumberland coast of New Brunswick.

SWWAT member Natasha Bell believes overdevelopment has led to pollution problems at Parlee Beach and Murray Beach but she adds Aboiteau Beach is also becoming a concern.

“We are trying to stop a development – a proposed trailer park with 250 lots – on Crown land at Aboiteau Park which to date hasn’t had significant water problems,” she notes.

Bell says the coalition was pleased by the overwhelming support from the public at a recent rally in Shediac but disappointed that no government representatives showed up or commented despite being invited.

SWWAT is seeking a temporary moratorium on development along the Northumberland coast to see if that will have an impact.

The provincial and federal governments have announced recent investments and upgrades along the coast with a focus on water testing.

But Bell says testing is only identifying problems that were already known.
