It’s a unique project with a lot of cooperation in Charlotte County.
Federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Dominic LeBlanc announcing New Brunswick’s first designated wild salmon conservation marine site, near Grand Manan Island.
Leblanc says this is the result of a partnership between both the federal and provincial governments, indigeonous peoples, industry, conservationists, and scientists, who all share the same goal — to help the Bay of Fundy’s wild salmon to rebound.
Smolts captured from Fundy National Park rivers and the Petitcodiac River will be raised in custom designed aquaculture net pens. Once they reach maturity, they will be released back into their home rivers prior to the spawning season.
LeBlanc says the goal of the project is to help scientists better understand the process of rearing wild smolt in marine pens, and how this effects their survival in the wild as compared to traditional stocking methods.
