Fraud Cases Rose By Nearly 50-Percent In 2015, RCMP Report Says

There was a dramatic jump in the number of fraud reports last year according to the New Brunswick RCMP’s annual report.

There was a nearly 50-percent rise in cases of fraud in 2015 and police say it’s an increase that they take very seriously – they do note though that the rise could be a good indication that more people know what fraud is and are reporting it to police. There was also an increase in thefts and break and enters. Drug offenses, meantime, fell by almost 15-percent.

In 2015 the RCMP’s Major Crime Unit investigated seven murders and four attempted murders. Police say that all but one of the cases led to charges being laid which was a murder-suicide. As well, their Emergency Response Team responded to 29 call-outs which included such things as hostage situations and barricaded persons.

25-percent of all events the RCMP responded to in New Brunswick last year involved traffic. On RCMP-policed roadways last year 43-percent of the 51 people killed last year were not wearing a seatbelt and 29-percent of people who died were killed in crashes that involved alcohol or drugs.
