If you’re thinking about taking a dip outside in New Brunswick then you’ll want to avoid Nashwaak Lake for the time being because a blue-green algae advisory has been issued.
Blue-green algae can produce toxins that can irritate your skin, eyes and throat and if you swallow the algae that could lead to more serious health problems like severe gastrointestinal sickness.
Young kids and people with skin conditions may be especially vulnerable to these effects. Blue-green algae can be fatal to pets and livestock.
Regional medical officer of health Dr. Na-Koshie Lamptey says any sort of water activity or contact with water in areas of Nashwaak Lake where you can see surface scum or discoloration should be avoided.
