Wednesday Morning Sports For August 2nd

Team New Brunswick won three medals at the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg. 18 year old Laura Dickinson won silver in the 3000 metre steeplechase while Liam Turgeon of Tide Head won bronze in the shot put and Christel Robichaud of Moncton also won a bronze medal in the female para discus. In women’s basketball, New Brunswick lost in quarter final play to Manitoba 71-68.

In the Majors, the Boston Red Sox are back in first place in the American League East after a 12-10 win over Cleveland. Christian Vazquez hit a three run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. The two teams combined for 28 hits and six home runs……The New York Yankees fell a half game back after losing 4-3 to Detroit……Justin Smoak hit his 31st homer with Josh Donaldson also hitting a homer and driving in three runs as the Toronto Blue Jays downed the Chicago White Sox 8-4…..In the National League, pitcher Jon Lester hit his first ever homer as the Chicago Cubs beat up on Arizona 16-4. Max Scherzer also hit his first homer in the Majors but had to leave the game with neck spasms as Washington lost to Miami 7-6.

In New Brunswick Senior Baseball, the Saint John Alpines overcame a 5-0 deficit to edge the Fredericton Royals 6-5. Mark Leger hit a bases loaded single to knock in the winning run. The Royals and Alpines play again tomorrow night at Memorial Field at 7:30.

The Saint John Junior Alpines won the opener of their best of three quarter final against Chatham 2-1 on a two run double by Tom Delaney. Game two will be played tonight at Memorial Field with an 8:00 start.

Calvin Ross of Fredericton has a share of the lead halfway through the Canadian Junior Golf Championship in Kingston, Ontario.
