UPDATE: Outrage Over Toilet Paper Rationing In Privately Owned Moncton Special Care Home

Families with loved ones in the Manoir Notre-Dame special care home in Moncton are outraged over an order to ration their toilet paper.

A Facebook post went viral this weekend showing a letter telling residents they’d be getting only two rolls of toilet paper a week, citing an increase in overall costs.

Seniors’ rights advocate Cecile Cassista quickly reached out to her contact at the Department of Social Development.

“Along with the regional director to let them know this needed to be dealt with and was urgent, and basically asked that the owner apologize to all the residents and families and retract the letter,” says Cassista.

She did hear back from the government saying they would deal with the matter.

“I am overly concerned with the part where there’s retaliation by the owner to evict maybe the residents, and I raised that concern this morning with [the Department of] Social Development, and basically told me they’d look into it,” says Cassista.

She is waiting for the owner’s next steps and hopes “that they will act very cautiously and not start exercising their power to evict anybody, because in my view, in my opinion basically that’s absolutely abuse of power and it’s unacceptable.”

Meanwhile, the owner of the Manoir Notre-Dame has reached out to us to say despite recent events, all services offered to residents and families will remain the same.

Val Robichaud confirmed the intent of the letter was to ensure a supply of toilet paper was available for everyone.

Some residents were taking more than their fair share and stockpiling toilet paper, and they were trying to address that issue.

Robichaud says every resident will get two toilet paper rolls per week, and if they need more they will be given it upon request.

Robichaud goes on to say staff will be meeting with each resident to reassure them about their services.
