There’s growing alarm over the escalating tensions between the U.S. and North Korea. This follows U.S. President Donald Trump threatening North Korea with fire and fury over its nuclear weapons.
Dr. David Charters of the Gregg Centre for the Study of War and Society at the University of New Brunswick says there’s a danger of stumbling into a conflict because Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un are unpredictable.
Dr. Charters says Trump may have boxed himself in with his heated rhetoric, leaving himself just two options……Act or back down which he accused former President Barack Obama of doing in Syria with his red line over the use of chemical weapons.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is trying to be a voice of calm by saying the threat from North Korea shouldn’t keep people awake at night.
Dr. Charters agrees with Tillerson, pointing out while North Korea may have miniaturised its nuclear warhead to fit on long range ballistic missiles, there’s no indication whether the guidance systems are up to par and neither side is making preparations for war.
