At the World Junior Hockey Championship, the U.S. erased a pair of two goal deficits to edge Canada 5-4 in a shootout. Troy Terry got the shootout winner for the second game in a row. Thomas Chabot of the Sea Dogs was named the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.

In the NHL, Edmonton got by Boston 4-3 as Patrick Maroon scored three goals for the Oilers……Patrick Kane scored 56 seconds into overtime in Chicago’s 4-3 win over Buffalo…..Detroit shut out Los Angeles 4-0….Washington blanked Columbus 5-0 to snap a 16 game winning streak by the Blue Jackets…..In other play, it was Nashville 6 Tampa Bay 1……Carolina 4 St. Louis 2 and Minnesota 5 San Jose 4.

Among all thirty NHL hockey teams, support in Atlantic Canada is highest for the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs, according to a poll by Corporate Research Associates. 26% of Atlantic Canadians who follow hockey identify the Montreal Canadiens as their favourite NHL team while 20% support the Toronto Maple Leafs. 5 per cent say their favourite team is the Boston Bruins followed by the Pittsburgh Penguins at 4 per cent.

The Saint John Riptide are now 3 and 1 with their third straight win after a 92-86 win over the Moncton Miracles. The Riptide are back home tomorrow night against the Niagra River Lions with tipoff at 7:00.
