Gallant Gov’t Cautious As Economy Improves

The New Brunswick economy is performing better than expected but the Gallant government says it remains cautious and prudent with any growth projections.

In its fiscal results for the first quarter of 2017-18, the province is projecting a deficit of $156 million which is a reduction of $35 million compared to the budget.

Finance Minister Cathy Rogers says the deficit is being reduced in a steady, responsible way and the economy is improving.

Revenue is projected to be $10 million dollars higher and expenditures are down $25 million from the budget.

The province projects real GDP growth of 0.8 per cent for 2017 while the consensus among private sector forecasters is growth of 1.2 per cent for the year.
