Researchers and students will be working on various cyber threats at the newly formed Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity at the University of New Brunswick’s Fredericton campus.
IBM Security will become the first partner in research and development.
Chief Technology Officer Sandy Bird says cybersecurity is a big problem and it’s getting worse every year.
“The number of attacks continues to increase, the cost of those attacks is getting more costly for organizations. And we don’t have enough skills to solve the problems. Cybersecurity is one that has a huge, huge gap right now,” notes Bird.
By the year 2020, Bird says it’s estimated that there could be as many as 1.5 million unfilled jobs in the cybersecurity field.
Ottawa is contributing almost $2.3 million, the province is investing $1.9 million while the university is providing $330,000 to create the institute which is being housed at existing campus facilities.
