More than 11, 000 athletes from around the world are set to compete as the Summer Olympics in Rio get underway tonight.
There are three from New Brunswick vying for a gold medal.
It takes a lot of hard work and perseverance to get to the Olympics, but many athletes are up to the challenge.
Technical Director with Athletics New Brunswick Gabriel Leblanc says they train with that one goal in mind, “To make it to that level, you have to be the one per cent of the one per cent of the one per cent. But that is definitely everyone’s dream. Some people will make it, while others won’t.”
The last time a New Brunswick athlete made it to the podium at the Olympics was in 2000.
This year, there are high hopes for Genevieve Lalonde of Moncton, who will compete in the 3000 metre steeplechase on August 13th.

Catherine Pendrel from Harvey Station who will compete August 20th in mountain biking.
Not all of the work that goes into a season happens on the bike. Planning is as important as execution. So is coffee pic.twitter.com/OHuwZZ59NN
