Just a day after the Prime Minister was in Moncton, The Minister for the Status of Women Maryam Monsef came to Saint John announcing $2 million dollars for gender equality projects in Atlantic Canada.

The Saint John Women’s Empowerment Network will get $313 thousand dollars and the Fredericton Sexual Assault Centre gets $283,000.

Monsef told the crowd at a panel discussion she has been listening to the organizations on the ground working to advance gender equality.
She says some of these groups helped the Federal government shape the first ever strategy to address and prevent gender-based violence and she wanted to hear what is actually working on the ground and what they need to take into account as they develop future calls for grants and project proposals.
150 leaders who are women have been chosen from all over the country and they will take part in a national conference in September in Toronto discussing what is next in order to make gender equality a reality in Canada.
