St. Louis downed San Francisco 5-2. Elsewhere, The Reds beat the Mets 7-2, the Twins got by the White Sox 5-4.
The Astros got a little insurance for the postseason run. Houston acquired right-hander Justin Verlander from the Detroit Tigers.
The 34 year old Verlander is 10-8 with a 3.82 ERA in 28 starts this season.
At the U.S. Open, Raphael Nadal advanced to the third round beating Taro Daniel.
It took five sets but, Roger Federer advanced beating Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny.
