The Toronto Blue Jays have taken over first place in the American League East after a 7-0 win over Tampa Bay while Baltimore lost in Oakland 1-0…..Pitcher J.A. Happ of the Blue Jays got the win to improve to 16 and 3. Troy Tulowitski homered and drove in 5 runs…..The Boston Red Sox lost to the New York Yankees 9-4 with catcher Gary Sanchez getting four hits including his first Major League homer….David Ortiz of the Red Sox limped off the field in the 9th after fouling a pitch off his shin but he didn’t break anything. In other play, it was Washington 7 Cleveland 4….Arizona 3 NY Mets 2….San Diego 4 Pittsburgh 0….St. Louis 3 Cincinnati 2….Chicago Cubs 3 Los Angeles Angels 1…Texas 5 Colorado 4….Milwaukee 4 Atlanta 3…..Kansas City 3 Chicago White Sox 2 (14 innings) and Seattle 3 Detroit 1.

In New Brunswick Senior Baseball, the Saint John Alpines defeated the Moncton Fisher Cats 5-4 to improve to 10 and 16. They face eachother tonight at Memorial Field with a 7:30 start.

At the Olympics, the Canadian women’s 4 by 200 metre freestyle relay team won a bronze medal…..Canada is now 3 and 0 in women’s basketball after a 68-58 win over Senegal……Canada’s Eleanor Harvey scored a major upset in fencing when she defeated the world’s number one from Italy to advance to the quarterfinals.

Longtime sports broadcaster John Saunders has died at the age of 61. He worked for ATV in Atlantic Canada back in 1979-80 before joining ESPN in the U.S. where he covered college football, basketball and the NHL as well as hosting the weekly show “The Sports Reporters”.
