Lobster Fisherman Says Catch This Season Lower Than Last Year

The lobster season in Zone 25, on the Northumberland Strait got underway this week.

Fishermen were optimistic that the crustaceans would be plentiful this season.

One fishermen says it hasn’t been as impressive as they first thought.

Mario Leblanc has been fishing since he was a wee lad. He goes out with the family each year in the L’Aboiteau area, with his mom on one boat and his dad on another.

He says so far this week has been a bit disappointing, “The lobster fishermen this year were extremely optimistic, but at the end of the day to be honest, the price is expected to be better than last year, which is great, but I do believe the quantities have decreased as compared to last year.”

Being a lobster fishermen certainly isn’t easy. Leblanc says it is hard work, “We usually leave the Wharf anytime between 3am and 4am, because it takes about an hour to get where your traps are out in the ocean. it can be anywhere from a 12 hours day, to a 16 hour day.”

Between the two boats, they put out about 500 traps a day.

He says the best part of being a lobster fisherman, is coming home and eating a delicious boiled crustacean or a seafood casserole.
