At the Olympics, swimmer Penny Oleksiak made Canadian Olympic history by winning her fourth medal, this time a gold in the women’s 100 metre freestyle. She wound up in a tie with an American swimmer and both were awarded gold medals……..Another swimmer, Micheal Phelps of the U.S. won his 22nd gold medal. Canada will face France today in women’s soccer with the winner advancing and the loser eliminated.
Without saying why, Sea Dogs President Trevor Georgie has announced Darrell Young has been relieved of his duties as general manager of the team while, at the same time, expressing support for Head Coach Danny Flynn. Georgie will take over as general manager in the interim.
In the Majors, Baltimore moved just half a game back of the idle Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East after a 9-6 win over Oakland……Mark Trumbo hit a grand slammer for the Orioles….Alex Rodriguez drove in a run with a bases loaded dribbler as the New York Yankees rallied with 3 runs in the 8th inning for a 4-2 win over the Boston Red Sox……The Chicago Cubs won their 10th in a row, 4-3 in 11 innings over St. Louis. Elsewhere, it was Arizona 9 NY Mets 0…..Pittsburgh 4 San Diego 0……Houston took two from Minnesota, 15-7 and 10-2…..Colorado 12 Texas 9….Milwaukee 11 Atlanta 3….Cleveland 14 Los Angeles Angels 4 and Kansas City 2 Chicago White Sox 1.
In New Brunswick Senior Baseball, the Saint John Alpines took their second straight from the Moncton Fisher Cats in extra innings 3-2….The Alpines play a doubleheader in Charlottetown tomorrow.
