Common Council has accepted a report from the group Kitchen/Slack to look into the issues regarding municipal taxes in Saint John. The report raised issues such as implementing user fees rather than taxes and do a better job of promoting economic development. Some councillors suggested Saint John follow other jurisdictions that tax their industries more, such as daily per barrel oil production rather than a flat property tax. Mayor Don Darling says this report will be studied thoroughly before any thing is put in place. Darling says taxes are complex and he never expected this report to come up with all the answers at this time.
