Province Urged To Make Response To Sexual Assaults Better

The provincial government is being urged to improve the responses to reports of sexual assault.

Police departments are reviewing their past cases that were determined to be unfounded which mean’t no charges were laid.

The Executive-Director of the New Brunswick Women’s Council Beth Lyons says the system could be made better with access to free legal advice for survivors, trauma training for those people who work in law enforcement and the justice system, a review of policing procedures when it comes to investigating sexual assaults and more resources for police and the justice system.

The Women’s Council argues the rate of sexual assault cases that were classified as unfounded in New Brunswick is disproportionately high.

Police Departments are reviewing those cases deemed to be unfounded.
