There’s rare unanimity in the legislature as the provincial government introduces Ellen’s Law to better protect cyclists.
International cyclist Ellen Watters was killed in Sussex over Christmas after being struck by a vehicle.
The M-L-A for Sussex-Fundy-St. Martins Bruce Northrup became emotional when talking about her while welcoming her family to the legislature.
Liberal cabinet minister Rick Doucet also choked up when talking about Ellen’s Law which stipulates drivers stay at least a metre away from cyclists.
Congratulations to all who contributed to #ellenslaw, introduced in the Legislature today. Safety for everyone on the road. #nb @WayneArr pic.twitter.com/xTpehFx5rS

Provincial Green Party Leader David Coon is hoping Ellen’s Law will serve as a catalyst to make cycling safer in the province, calling it her legacy
Ellen’s Law is a first step. Next we need DTI to budget money for making our roads and streets more cycle friendly and safer for cyclists.
