Malicious Emails Cause Concern At Universite De Moncton

U de M is now working with Codiac RCMP after malicious emails were sent to the university community.

The emails were sexually explicit and degrading and targeted one woman in particular..but they were sent to thousands of the students.

President and Vice-Chancellor Raymond Theberge says they have determined that this is a case of someone being impersonated and it does not compromise the security of the school’s IT network, and that all staff and students are safe.

The understanding at this point is that the email came from a server in Europe, “If you were to look at some of the other cases in the country in the last number of years, that servers in Europe are used to re-route emails. From what we know now, it is in Europe, and the RCMP is looking into it.”

The first email was sent on Saturday, a second later the same day, and the third on Sunday.

Theberge says, their first priority is to ensure their students are safe, “The student who has been targeted has received some invidualized help from a number of services inside the university, and she is also dealing with various Counsellors to help her sort things out. Our first concern is that the student was safe, and well supported, and also that our student population felt safe, so we took the measures to do that.”
